Nicholas Sargent

I studied Fine Art (Sculpture) at Brighton, Norwich School of Art and post grad Reading University. Forty years of working as a composer and in higher education.

My painting focus is on revealing something deeply personal in landscape / portrait / objects and places. I do not start a painting until I have a strong sense of the energy I can bring to a subject. I work quickly, responding to what's happening on the canvas rather than forcing a particular predicted outcome. I am constantly surprised and delighted when things go right and try to reveal detail through leaving things out. Unusually I do not work with sketch books, preparatory work or test pieces. Each painting is a full 'self' which I either keep or discard.
